Hi everyone,
As this was just a blog for a university module, I will not be posting on here anymore. I will keep it just in case I use it as an inspiration blog or for a future university project. However, I will be posting regularly & as usual on my personal blog Rebecca's Vintage Romance.
Thank you so much for finding interest in this blog & for following.

Assignment Evaluation

Assignment Three: Evaluation

For this brief I wanted to work with another stylist as last time I didn’t and I felt the styling could have been pushed a lot further. So for this assignment I wanted the styling to be strong and creative. Our group for this project was I, Rachelle Bell, Josh Brown and Rebecca Aubrey. The other three had worked together for the previous project and were happy to work together again, so I joined them.

We found ‘Education’ to be slightly difficult as a starting point as we didn’t want to develop a concept that was too cliché and ‘done a hundred times before’. We didn’t want to do anything that was themed around stereotypes or school or an actual education environment and wanted to move away onto something a little less obvious. So after a few group meetings, we decided we wanted to develop a concept based around production and being made into a final product to be bought by employers. We felt it was a strong concept and that we could produce some interesting images from it.

We felt a shop location would be perfect for the shoot so we got researching into it. Rachelle got in touch with the manager of the local shopping mall and he allowed us to use an empty shop as our location. It was a brilliant place to take images in and we knew that with a strong location like that we could get some excellent fashion shots.

The photo shoot day went very well and we all worked successfully as a team and because of that, we produced some great images. The styling worked very well in the dark environment as we had many different textures and garments that reflected the light. I did feel however that we just worked as our separate roles; Becky and Josh were the photographers and Rachelle and I were the stylists. We didn’t work together as a group on the technicalities whereas I think we should have worked as a whole in every aspect.

The layout was inspired by images seen in the lectures from I.D, Dazed and Confused and Purple Fashion magazine. We wanted to achieve something simple and effective by using some diptychs and white spaces around the images. We didn’t feel that having the images as A4 would be as effective.

Overall I feel our group worked well together at the start of the brief, but then we slightly fell apart at the end. Rachelle was always the person organising meetings and the photographers were slightly hard to work with when deciding on the final images and the editing. They couldn’t come to a compromise on a few occasions, when Rachelle and I made suggestions which would have benefited the final images. I enjoyed working with them as they’re good technical photographers but as a group we were all unorganised and this could have affected our final work. However, I am happy with our final images and I feel they are going to be different to the other groups in the module.

Final Layout

These are our final layout pages. We're all pleased with how they came out as a group. Becky and Josh did the main layout but we all discussed it together. Rachelle and I were making final touches to the edited images while the other were constructing the layout.

The layout is simple but effective. We used a quote from the Education Changing Paradigms video as we felt this reflected our photo shoot. The images all work well next to each other and I think the order works well.

Layout ideas

For this brief, we were told to edit it as if it were to appear in a magazine. We were told to think about layouts and how we would display the images.

After seeing layouts from Purple Fashion magazine and Dazed and Confused in our lectures ( I wish I could find the same images), we were very keen to create a layout inspired by them.

These are some images that inspired me for the layout:

We liked the idea of using diptych 's throughout our magazine layout and also thought about having them placed on the pages 'randomly' but obviously not that randomly because we've thought it through. But we wanted it to be an interesting layout with not much text apart from the title page (as seen above: the 'I.Robots' title page). We wanted to have big white spaces around the images as this brings the focus in more to the images. Having full A4 page images isn't always effective and they lose a little of their 'wow factor'.

Final Images: Edited

These are the final images. They were just brightened up slightly and we took out any obvious flaws and made her skin look brighter. The colours were made more vibrant and they all keep the same aesthetic. Becky wanted to edit the images initially so she did and then we went through them all together and did some final changes.

(Awaiting rest of final images)

Final Images: Un-edited

These are the final images we have chosen. We thought as a group that these were the strongest images with the best poses, faces, lighting and styling. We have a wide range of photos so they definitely aren't repetitive in my opinion. I'm really pleased with them!

Choosing the images

Here are some of the best images from the day. They are un-edited. We wanted to include some still life images in the final magazine layout also, so here are some of the best.

They need brightening up a little to bring out the colours and details. We also needed to whittle these down even more as there are too many!
